Productivity Tip: Systems Rock!

One of the best ways to improve productivity, efficiency, and profitability is to systemize your business. All that means is taking some time to look at the process of working your business and documenting it. If you’ve never done this before, it can be a bit intimidating. I mean, you’re already busy running your business. Now you’re supposed to stop doing that and think about how you run your business? What earthly good will that do you? Is that supposed to help you make more money?

YES! Solid Systems Equal More Money!

Until you analyze your procedures and workflow, you have no way of knowing if they are efficient or if you are losing money. When I first got into business, I’ll be honest. I didn’t have a CLUE what I was doing. My degree is in elementary education and now here I was, running a business! I had to learn on the job. Everything. Sales. Marketing. Bookkeeping. Project management. Workflows. (I had no idea what “workflow” even meant for like 20 years!)

Fast Forward…

After working inefficiently for many years, and suffering from Lyme disease which caused me memory problems (I’m better now, thank you, Lord!), I figured there must be a better way to handle all the work tasks I had to do. I basically went back to school and studied different organizational methods like Getting Things Done (get your copy of the book in my Resources HERE). I became and Evernote Certified Consultant (want to learn more about Evernote? Click HERE!). I took various webinars and studied with Nicole Walters and Mike Michalowicz.  What I learned the most was the importance of building a system for running my business.

Systems offer many benefits. One is that you are more easily and efficiently able to train new employees because you will have training set up and ready to go. You have the beginning of a succession plan so that you can one day pass on or sell your business.  You can even just take a break from your company knowing it won’t all fall apart because your systems will keep things going. And there are more.
